Hamleys: Top 100 Toys of All Time
Channel 4 · ITN Productions

A feature-length Christmas special celebrating the toys that defined generations, with exclusive after-hours access to Hamleys’ Regent Street store. Jonathan Ross and his daughter Honey, Alison Hammond and her son Aidan, and comedians Lou Sanders and Harriet Kemsley were let loose among everything from Lego and Hungry Hippos to Operation, Cabbage Patch Kids and Tracy Island.

The film mixed that playful access with archive, old toy commercials and the stories behind some of the biggest crazes of the past two centuries. I worked across the edit to keep the nostalgia, comedy and history moving together, while giving the contributors enough space to genuinely enjoy themselves rather than making it feel like a conventional countdown show.

The response was warm rather than heavily reviewed. Contemporary previews described the premise as a “nostalgia-fuelled countdown” and singled out the chemistry of the cast and the sheer fun of turning an empty Hamleys into a playground for adults. Channel 4 itself promoted it as a “celebrity-packed celebration” and a heart-warming look inside the world’s oldest toy store.

“A pure sugar rush of childhood memories.”
